The Masterwork in the Burial Chamber.

The Kariye Camii museum has a great fresco cycle that includes the Last Judgement.  In the detail, an angel holds up a symbol of creation.  I wish we knew more about the artist or artists who created this work.  The fresco is still in pretty good shape.  This church must have a depiction of nearly all of the major images from the life of Christ.  This place is also called the Chora Church in Istanbul, Turkey.

Trip Review- Kariye Camii

One of the great art spaces has to be found at the Kariye Camii in Istanbul.  It was part of an old palace complex at one time and it was on the edge of town, near the giant walls.  When the walls were breached in 1453, it was the first place that was sacked and desecrated and lucky for me, the mosaics and frescos were painted over (and preserved) for hundreds of years.  Now it is a museum with one of the greatest mosaic schemes in the history of Christianity.  This fresco is one that I used to call the "Star Wars Jesus".  It is advanced for its design, action and power.  It is the Anastasis or Harrowing of Hell.  Christ takes
Adam and Eve out of hell, with the devil bound at his feet.

Jeff and I are taking a break outside of the church with some tea.  This is from the spring break trip of 2006.

Trip Review- The bazaar in Istanbul.

One of the places to visit in Istanbul is the bazaar or the Grand Bazaar(Kapali Carsi).  I never would call something overrated, but I think the bazaar was more modern than I hoped.  You begin to notice that there is a lot of repetition of items, and plenty of evil eye totems, jewelry, carpets and typical souvenirs for sale.  On my second trip I convinced a dealer to show me a gold solidus from the Byzantine era.  It would be illegal for me to take it out of the country.   I wasn't even tempted.  It was about 5 times more than what I could buy it for on Ebay.
